i'm ready to contribute if you start some discussions. i'm just spread a little thin.

as for your question... i don't get the impression that memetics is really taking off, aside from the term "meme" loosely used in popular culture. i think it's mostly not popular because of it smacks of behaviorism a bit. people don't like the idea of ideas replicating themselves without people choosing what they believe. so of course, people usually use the term "meme" to apply to beliefs they don't like or think are stupid, even though it's really a value-neutral concept.

How would you know if memetics is "taking off"? What would need to happen for you to have that impression?

in answer to your taking off question, I personally would say that it would mean that I wouldn't have to go through the whole definition of a meme and end up derailing the conversation in which I was probably just going to add a memetic viewpoint to whatever social behavior is being discussed at a gathering....

Although I'm starting to get better at the concise and clear transference of the metameme but maybe that's just my impression....but still it derails everything, even if people are interested in it. I don't want to have to explain it again.

I think that thinking about thinking and how we process thinking and spreading thoughts is just too much for most folks...yes we all like to get self reflective but if you really get into it you can get to the point where there is no self and no self protecting memetic construct is going to really go there, for fun unless it's just weird and shit.

And like you said, there's also the random "Let's get those bad memes and show people the TRUTH" posts which I just don't even look at anymore.

I love memetics, but it's either misunderstood as simple internet fads, dismissed as pseudo science or just too cerebrally internalizing for most folks.
